Exhibition |
The National Institute of Mathematical Sciences (NIMS) presents a very special IMAGINARY exhibition in collaboration with the ICM committee and the MathematischesForschungsinstitutOberwolfach (MFO). It will feature the best of all IMAGINARY modules of the last years including new software, images, films and sculptures. It will be the biggest IMAGINARY exhibition shown so far. |
IMAGINARY is an interactive mathematics exhibition and open platform for mathematical exhibits. It was originally developed for the Year of Mathematics 2008 in Germany and has grown into an international phenomenon with more than 120 exhibitions in 25 countries, attracting over 1 million visitors. |
Its intention is to display visualizations, interactive installations, virtual realities, 3D objects and their theoretical background in a variety of mathematical fields, as for example algebraic geometry, differential geometry, crystallography, and differential equations connected to the mathematics of our planet earth. |
The exhibition sets out to evoke interest and curiosity in mathematics and to learn about astonishing applications. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the exhibits and create their own mathematical artwork or simulations using special software. Demonstrators are available to give helpful insights into the mathematics behind the modules shown. |
This special exhibition titled NIMS IMAGINARY will feature 10 interactive touch screen panels, a mathematical image gallery and 3d sculptures. It will be shown during the ICM 2014in Seoul for the first time in South Korea and later permanently installed at NIMS in Daejeon. |
In parallel to the exhibition, an IMAGINARY panel with a mathematics vision slam will be organized on August 20th. More details can be found in the next section. |
• Call for participation |
We invite the mathematical community to share their latest visualizations, films, 3d sculptures or software programs. We would love to show the best new creations to the mathematicians visiting the ICM. The modules have to be made available under an open source license, should be of high aesthetic value and communicate the underlying mathematics, for example through interactivity or good explanation texts. The deadline for submissions is June 21, 2014. |
Please submit your work either directly at the IMAGINARY platform or send us an email at info@imaginary.org |

Math Vision Slam and Exhibition Visit |
As part of the Math Popularization Day, IMAGINARY will organize an IMAGINARY panel which consists of a mathematics vision slam titled “Mathematics communication for the future” and a special exhibition visit on August 20th from 15:00 – 16:30. |
In the vision slam, professionals in the field of mathematics communication will present their visions for future mathematics communication. You will hear different perspectives from renowned mathematicians, a young researcher and a mathematics teacher. Each speaker has 10 minutes to catch the audience’s attention and transmit novel thoughts and ideas. Enter with a curious mind! |
The panel is held under the umbrella of IMAGINARY, which will be briefly introduced by Gert-Martin Greuel, former director of the MFO. IMAGINARY ideas will also be present in most of the vision slam talks. |
After the vision slam, everybody is invited to visit the NIMS IMAGINARY exhibition shown at the conference. Mathematicians, contributors, and team members of the local exhibition present in Seoul will guide you and talk about details and insights into the exhibits. This special exhibition tour will start at 4 pm and is open ended. |
